Welcome back for another fun book chat!
This week I chose to combine my two passions for this prompt: books & music. I don't always have music playing while I read, but I do tend to play music (while I'm not reading) that correlates to the current book. Or when I'm listening to music, I'll think, "this song really reminds me of {insert book title}". On my iPod, you would find many, many playlists entitled, Hunger Games, BDB, Shiver, Fever series, etc. Not only does listening to those playlists remind me of that book, but also of the time when I was reading it. I'm very nostalgic, if you couldn't tell. Thought to ponder: Has anyone listened to The Hunger Games movie soundtrack. Phenomenal album and list of artists! Decemberists, Glen Hansard, The Civil Wars, Arcade Fire. For reals, awesomeness. But...did anyone hear one song play in any of that entire movie?? Yeah, me neither. But I felt all of those songs were appropriate to that movie/book. Just an interesting point I had to add.
Okay so for my playlists this week...
I recently finished The Maze Runner trilogy. I listened to a lot of Sleigh Bells and The Naked and Famous during that time. Both have a slight techno/futuristic sound that went well with the tone of the series.
Road to Hell - Sleigh Bells
Vessel - Zola Jesus
True Loves - Hooray for Earth
Born to Lose - Sleigh Bells
There, There - Radiohead
Yellow Light - Of Monsters and Men
The Sun - The Naked and Famous
"Here it comes...the unavoidable sun"
-The Sun, The Naked and Famous
I didn't create a playlist for A Fault in our Stars (it only took me roughly 48 hours to read), but I did listen to the entire Angus & Julia Stone and Birdy collection while I read it. It went perfectly with the constant stream of tears I had running down my face for all of those 48 hours.
The next day while I was listening to Fun. I kept thinking that it really seemed like something the characters would like. So I came up with a little playlist for it anyway, even though I was done reading it.
Take You Away - Angus and Julia Stone
Carry On - Fun.
Misguided Ghosts - Paramore
Just Breath - Pearl Jam
I'll Never Forget You - Birdy
Wild Horses - Rolling Stones
"I have my freedom but I don't have much time. Faith has been broken, tears must be cried. Let's do some living after we die" -Wild Horses, Rolling Stones
And lastly, I just want to share that sometimes, when you're reading a historical novel, you don't have to stick to monks and Beethoven. This is the playlist I go to when I'm reading historical fiction, mostly Outlander or Austen. Or like now, I'm reading Waterfall, and this list would go perfectly.
Flightless Bird, American Mouth - Iron & Wine
Arrivals - Aqualung
Anything by Vitamin String Quartet
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
Rise to Me - The Decemberists
Sim Sala Bim - Fleet Foxes
Cataracts - Andrew Bird
The Blower's Daughter - Damien Rice
Sun-drenched World - Joshua Radin
"My darling, my sweetheart, I am in your sway"
-Rise to Me, The Decemberists
Here are a couple of the playlists I have created in the past:
So, I asked you guys to join me in my nerdiness for a week & try to come up with some book playlists of your own. I cannot wait to hear what you have to share!
As always, no pressure! If you only have a song, a genre, an artist, whatever!
For next week:
Share your favorite books from your childhood. Anything from Seuss to R.L. Stine. Could be the first book you remember or one that brings forth a special memory. Do you remember the first chapter book you read? When did you fall in love with reading? Pictures encouraged...especially awkward pre-teen ones.

That quote from Naked & Famous works SO WELL with Maze Runner! I really like your playlists, they go perfectly with the books. Well, the first two- I don't know the third!
ReplyDeleteIn general, songs don't tend to remind me of a particular book. I much more often associate songs to periods in my life, or places. Like for example the song 'Pressure' by Paramore was the first song I played every single day on my iPod while I was in Greece. So now, I always think of those beaches when it comes on!
I CAN'T WAIT FOR NEXT WEEK :)Now that I work with kid's books I've been able to rediscover all my favorites... It's gonna be a good one!
I'm not a music person, but I will definitely link up next week for the childhood faves!
ReplyDeleteAaaaahh, I'm so excitedabout next week! :) mayeven try and dig out a picture for you all!
ReplyDeleteAww thanks for adding in the 'no pressure' clause, I hope that wasn't on my account after a certain panicked tweet! Haha I have written a post but delayed it until tomorrow seeing as my post for today was sort of date specific!
Love your playlists - only further reminding me that I really need to read TFIOS!!
This is such a cool prompt! I have an idea that's a little bit of the stretch on the topic, but I think you'll like it. :) Now I just need to get it written/posted after work!
ReplyDeleteComments are my favorite...
