Welcome back for another book chat! This week our co-host is Megan from Semi-Charmed Kind of Life. Megan and I have been blog friends for a while now and she has always been a loyal book chatter since the very beginning. Her blog is always so interesting. Travel, books, sorority life, and more. Not to mention, she is so sweet and fun to chat with. Please go check out her blog and say hi.
Oh and I firmly believe she hosts the very best reading challenges. The winter one is wrapping up now, but I bet my blog she's going to do one again this summer. Seriously, they are so fun.
Okay. As for the book chat this week...
I decided to take it easy this week and just ask everyone to share the book they're currently reading. If you just finished a book and want to share a review, that works too.
Every. night. I. pick. it. up...and nothing. I read...and just...nothing. I feel nothing for this character or this story. I'm not invested, nor do I care much. I could never pick it up again and it wouldn't bother me one bit. You know what this is? It's like reader's E.D. (look it up)
Too far? Sorry.
Cialis for readers maybe? Haha...I'll stop.
But the point is...we all know what it's like to feel like we're just chipping away at a book bit-by-bit, getting nowhere fast. The remaining 300 pages seem like a hurdle, rather than entertainment. Seriously, I could have read 3 other books by now! Ergh! On top of that...it drives me NUTS when I don't like a book that everyone else loves. What am I missing? It's like I'm at a party where everyone else is having fun and I'm not.
I'm not going to give it up yet. I do see the potential, and I think if I stick with it, I'll find the interest. I believe it's going to get better. I don't think it's a bad book, it's just not grabbing me. I keep telling myself, it has so much in common with other books I love (Maze Runner, The Hunger Games) so I should love it. I wish I knew.
Have you read it? Did you struggle at the beginning too? Did I just make a Cialis reference?
So...what are you reading and how do you like it? If you choose to blog along with us, please just follow the simple rules below...

I hate when you're reading a book you don't really like, but I can't just stop reading a book. I also hate when everyone else loves it, but you don't. You feel peer pressure like 'I'm going to say I loved it too.'
ReplyDeleteI'm currently reading The Kite Runner. It's one of those that "everyone" loves. It is good, but I wouldn't say it's one of my favorite books.
Hey Megan, I felt the same way about The Kite Runner! Don't feel bad. :)
DeleteI love love love Ender's Game. It's basically tied for my favorite book. I could read it over and over. But I've always felt like the first bit is definitely the slowest. If you plow through it, you get to a really good story!
ReplyDeleteI loved Ender's Game, and I've read it a few times. I think it's slow a bit, but it has its philosophies and deeper meanings hidden within the texts. Lots of moral issues pop up as you go. Once you finish that, he has a whole series with the character, though I heard most of the books suck. Except Speaker for the Dead. I think I liked that one better than Ender's Game!
ReplyDeleteI'm currently reading a stack of parenting books... boring :P
I definitely understand what you're going through. I read The Fault In Our Stars last week and I didn't like it at all, even though the majority of the world thinks it's the greatest book ever written. I don't think it's necessarily a bad book, and I completely get why a lot of people like it, but it just wasn't for me. It happens haha.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I love this idea of a link-up. I'm going to write a post up later today and do my best to make this a weekly thing for me! :)
I hate when you hear so many amazing things about a long-time classic and then don't like it. I feel like that would be my reaction to a lot of the classic novels that have made such an impact on the world, just because the writing back then was so different & the way they approached overall storytelling is not the way I've learned to appreciate it now. Sometimes that makes me feel like I don't deserve to call myself a book nerd, because I don't even read classics, but I do definitely give them a try once in a while. Good for you for pushing through a little and seeing if this one has potential! Maybe you'll end up leaving it!
ReplyDeletePS I am so down to read Bitterblue together! I may try and read a book or two after FIRE so that I can spread them out, but maybe in February we can read it together? I thought about linking my review of Graceling yesterday in today's Book Chat but that's just cheating, lol! I wrote a new post for today :)
I felt the same way about The Hunger Games. I had the hardest time getting into the first book and it took me forever to finish it. I just started hearing about Ender's Game this week too. It's like it's everywhere now.
ReplyDeleteI really liked Ender's Game when I read it back in high school, but I definitely know what you mean with some other books. That's how I felt about Alice Sebold's Lovely Bones. Everyone was freaking out about it (even Oprah) and honestly, it was one of the very few books I had to physically force myself to finish. I hated it! I've since realized that there's no shame in just not finishing a book - oh reader's regrets. I say, give it a fighting chance and if it isn't your thing...move on. There are too many amazing books to read ones that you don't love.
ReplyDeleteCialis for readers.
ReplyDeleteSo funny!
I hate when I just can't get into a book when I REALLY want to!
I wanna read Ender's Game! I read somewhere that a movie for it is scheduled to be released in theaters at the end of the year, so I need to get to it before then. But I understand what you mean - the first book in Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series was ok to me, not great, but I really had to force myself to read and finish the second one, and now I just gave up on the third one after only a few pages in. Not my cup of tea, but so many bloggers seem to love it.
ReplyDeletelinked up! btw, love the new layout.
ReplyDeleteReader's ED, haha, too funny. :) I know what you mean, though, about not being into a book that everyone seems to love! Then I'm like, "well wait.. is it ME?" :)
ReplyDeleteHope it gets better.. or at least you get to hurry up and finish it and move to something else. :)
I've never read Ender's Game! Always wanted to.... but I'm worried I'll have the same uninterested brain that you have about it. I just finished the Dark Tower book 1, the Gunslinger. Man, it was good. Really really good.

1. Sorry for being the worst co-host ever! This apartment I'm staying in has really bad Internet, and I can't figure out how to put pictures in my post on my iPad, and a bunch of other things happened that in no way make up for me not getting my post up this morning. So sorry!
ReplyDelete2. That being said, thank you SO MUCH for asking me to be one of your very first Book Chat co-hosts. :) I'm so honored, and of course I would love to do it again some time.
3. I'm sorry you don't like Ender's Game (yet)! But I don't think you should have to feel bad about it. Some books just aren't for everyone. How far into it are you?
4. I wonder what googling "E.D." did to everyone's safety filters?....
5. TWELVE links this week! That's awesome! *thumbs up*
And thanks for all the nice things you said about my blog! You are too sweet. :) I love working with you!
DeleteI DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW YOU CAN FEEL NOTHING FOR ENDER'S GAME.I didn't realize it was that many pages either...
ReplyDeleteThat being said... I'm going to write a post right now to link up because I just got done reading the perks of being a wallflower. I'll say no more about it so you can be surprised by what I thought :P
Stoaked to cohost next week!
The Ender's Game series is still one of my all-time favorites. I wonder if it's harder to get into though AFTER reading Hunger Games, Maze Runner, etc. because it IS a slower pace novel?
ReplyDeleteI totally understand your issues with enders game! I listened to the audio and had a really hard time getting into it, which I didn't understand since it's a genre I should love. The book changes a bit and got slightly more interesting, but I still just didn't like it as much as everyone else. I just felt like all the characters were so angry all the time and I couldn't connect with that. It is worth finishing so you can make a total judgment of the book, but if you still don't love it, you're not the only one!
